Final industrial demonstrator at company Vollers in Bremen/Germany

RobLog (Robotic Logistics) is a European Union robotics project that was created to develop a cognitive and autonomous robot. As the push and pull for optimizing logistics process continues, the technology behind RobLog will help to answer this demand by developing a system for safe and autonomous unloading of containers. Being autonomous and cognitive, the unloading system was specifically developed to be deployed to work in chaotically-packed environments or for usage when unloading heavy and deformable items.

The project is collaborative and manifests with two RobLog demonstrators currently being developed: an Advanced and an Industrial one. Both machines run the same software for object recognition and motion planning, but differentiate in their applications.

The exact developments of the RobLog Project include:

• capability of 3D perception in a challenging scenario (high variability of objects inc. deformable, dynamic scenes) and integration into a 3D model in real-time;

• grasping hypotheses, decisions and path-plans have to be generated and executed in an adaptive manner including obstacle avoidance and re-planning

• all actions ground in a physical set-up capable of handling a large variety of potentially deformable items.

• an interface suited for a human operator to provide high-level instructions to a multitude of systems operating at several unloading docks in parallel.

All project developments are demonstrated within the project in close cooperation with an industrial end-user in a realistic application scenario; thus opening the potential to reach a completely new level of automation in the logistics chain.

RobLog Project

RobLog (Cognitive Robot for Automation of Logistic Processes) has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreeement no 270350. It is an Integrated Project (IP) in the area “Cognitive Systems and Robotics.” RobLog has a budget of 7.61 million Euro with a funding of 5.59 million Euro. RobLog is a four-year project that started on the 1st of February 2011.
